The beauty of Switzerland extends far beyond the Swiss Alps. Cheese and chocolate delight the taste buds while historic cities intrigue the mind, and the people are friendly, intelligent, and well educated.

We started planning our Switzerland trip almost a year earlier by reserving a timeshare week in an alpine mountain village resort. We couldn't bring the family that week but they were so anxious to see Switzerland that we added a week to our vacation.

The first week was family week, a whirlwind tour of Geneva, Lausanne, Montreaux, Luzerne, Berne, Basel and Zurich. We cruised Lac Leman (aka Lake Geneva) and Lake Luzerne, visited Château de Chillon, crossed the country on Golden Pass train route and went to Zermatt for a close-up look at Matterhorn.

The second week was just for the two of us and was much more relaxing. We walked mountain trails around Mürren, and ate breakfast on the Shilthorn with 40 glaciers and 200 peaks in our view. We went atop of and then inside of a glacier at Jungfraujoch, the saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau peaks. And of course we sampled much fine food, including plenty of cheese and chocolate.
