Richard and Victoria in Italy - Day 4 Florence - Tuesday, Feb 28, 2006

Museums of Florence

The museums of Florence are home to several masterpieces, but unfortunately photos are not allowed in the museums. We started by walking to Uffizi, which took us by the River Arno.
Uffizzi, the oldest gallery in the world, houses many treasures of both medieval and renaissance art. We saw sculptures and paintings by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Titian, Leonardo da Vinci, Giotto, Rubens, and Rembrandt. We found a nice view of the river while there.
We then made our way to Bargello, built in 1255 as the city’s town hall. Today this is a museum that has a superb collection of Florentine Renaissance sculpture. There we found rooms dedicated to the work of Michelangelo, Donatello, Verrocchio, Giambologna, and Cellini.
We had lunch and Gelato (ice cream) at Bar Vivoli, which is claimed by many sources to have the best Gelato in the world. After trying 4 different flavors, we can not argue with that claim.
We sat at Piazza della Signoria for a while and enjoyed the view of buildings and statues.
After that we made our way to Santa Croce. This magnificent gothic church build in 1294 contains the tombs of many famous Florentines including Galileo, Michelangelo, Dante, Machiavelli, and Rossini.
We finished the day by shopping. We are the proud owners of nice leather jackets.
