Journal Germany - Day 5 - Wednesday, May 9, 2007

Augsburg

It was raining in the morning and we were not sure whether it would clear during the day, but decided to take a chance and go to Augsburg. Augsburg is the third largest city in Bavaria and one of the oldest in Germany. It was founded by the Romans and is named after the emperor Augustus. A sizable older section of town has several historic buildings to visit.
The rain was being stubborn, so we looked for a place to eat. A local lady saw us trying to decide where to eat and recommended a nice indoor market, which had several vendors offering variety of choices and to our delight entire area was smoke free. Passing thru the market we marveled at the selection of cheeses, sausages and other fine products. One vendor had a dozen of different sorts of olives.
After enjoying a meal and with the rain having lightened, we were off to see the sites. A quick stop in the tourist information center for a map and recommendation, and then we made our way down the street to the site we could already easily see, a "two for the price of one" church Saints Ulrich & Afra. It has two different churches built together, but with separate sanctuaries. Both are named Ulrich and Afra. One is Roman Catholic, the other Lutheran. Their peaceful coexistence is a result of the Peace of Augsburg concluded in 1555 between Catholics and Protestants.
Germany
The main street, Maximillanstrasse, runs from the Church of St. Ulrich to another landmark, the Rathaus.

We wandered around old town for a while. The rain never really let up for long, so we did the best we could in seeing the sites. One of the last things we passed was the Rathaus, which we had earlier glimpsed from a few blocks away. The Perlach Tower and Rathaus are Augsburg's landmarks.
Germany
The Rathausplatz is also the location of the Augustus fountain with statue of Emperor Augustus.

On the way back to the train we stopped for some delicious pastries.
