Journal Germany - Day 9 - Sunday, May 13, 2007

Regensburg

After breakfast, we were treated to a guided walking tour of the old city by Roman. Regensburg is one of Germany's best-preserved cities, relatively undamaged by World War II bombings. It started as a Celtic settlement some 2500 years ago. Later it became the Romans camp and center of their power on the upper Danube.
We walked by the medieval city wall and the Royal Villa and along the shores of the Danube.
Germany
Regensburg is one of the stops on the Danube River cruise. None of the cruise boats were docked this Sunday morning but two tugboats (one of them side-paddle-steamtug) were. The tugboats house Danube Navigation museum.
Germany
Shortly after passing the boat landing we reached the Old Stone Bridge and the oldest sausage kitchen in Germany. Historical Wurstkuchl started selling sausages in 1146.
Germany
Originally, small building was attached to the city wall and was used as a construction office between 1135 and 1146 when Steinerne Brücke (Old Stone Bridge) was being built. We walked across the Danube on a thousand foot long bridge that has spanned the Danube for almost 900 years.
Germany
The bridge was a great place to look back at the Regensburg's Old Town.
Germany
We walked back across the bridge and into the old town to visit the Dom St. Peter, magnificent Gothic cathedral.
Germany
After our tour of Regensburg, we enjoyed lunch with the family. Lunch was accompanied with several wine toasts to family, friends, and such.
Then Gregory and Inna drove us to Walhalla which is reminiscent of Nashville in that they copied the same Greek building.
Germany
It is positioned high above the river and offers a great view of surrounding area. Walhalla is sort of hall of fame of famous Germans and German-language speakers. Albert Einstein, Mozart and Catherine the Great of Russia are among those who made the "honor" list.
After Walhalla, Inna treated us to another guided walking tour of Regensburg and then back to their place for evening tea and snacks. We must admit to being a bit tired after such a long day, but it was really nice.
